Senate Passes Measure to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Records

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will force the release of case documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his Republican allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, expediting the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

The public have been patient long enough. The survivors have suffered long enough,” the top Senate Democrat said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Next Steps

The bill next will be sent to Donald Trump for his signature. The president indicated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Although the president has for months dismissed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the weekend, and announced he would approve it if it is presented to him.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, applauded after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would make public personal information of people, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
