The Prime Minister's Historic Election Victory Mismanagement Reaches A Sad Conclusion

The prevailing sentiment inside Labour MPs these days follows Edgar's law. This states that the extent of every hardship is only measured relative to yet-to-come catastrophes. As the playwright makes the exiled child of the visionless lord of Gloucester say in the play: “The most terrible is not, provided that we are able to utter ‘this marks the bottom’.”

A Chain of Deepening Difficulties

As per Edgar's law, there exists no opinion poll so gloomy about the government that won't be followed by another more depressing; no fiscal forecast so bad that the finance ministry cannot worsen it with conflicting messages on tax; no misgivings regarding the leader that can't be amplified through malicious leaks about a leadership challenge.

Refugee Measures Announcement

Considering this situation, the recent declaration of measures designed to limit the number of refugees admitted to the United Kingdom, based upon an infamously harsh Nordic approach, was taken more favorably with Labour MPs than anticipated. There were sparks of MP frustration however no blaze of opposition.

Tightening asylum rules is not the party's natural territory, but the current system is evidently broken and the public is enraged. The majority of representatives understand the reasoning that acceptance and intercommunal harmony are easier to cultivate provided there is trust that the country's boundaries are safely guarded.

Rising Unhappiness

Quiet backbenches may also represent foreboding. Parliamentarians have realized that each issue is discussable under an aimless chief of adaptable beliefs. Today's declarations could be withdrawn tomorrow. There's no requirement to charge forward when victories can be won via endurance.

A regular criticism concerns the Prime Minister is hardly managing the cabinet whatsoever, after assigning policy decisions to his principal advisor. That isn't to say the head of government is without administrative energy, he just prefers to refrain from intervening between ministry conflicts or engage in protracted arguments.

Governing Approach

Starmer came to political parties during later professional life, originally joining the legislature when he was fifty-two. He lacks instinct about movement history – the canon of former discussions, drives, personalities and traditional touchstones that bind a head to the broader organization and its perception of shared purpose.

His deepest convictions are a mystery even to the cabinet. As one senior representative explains: “The Prime Minister is quite different as head of government by creating the perception that his private opinions are not for public consumption.”

Governmental Outcomes

The product packaged as Starmer during the previous electoral contest has also not delivered its claimed rewards: executive proficiency leading to national renewal. Had the UK maintained a binary political arrangement, the remembrance of how bad things were with the previous government may continue tolerance for the party.

That presages a devastating defeat of Labour candidates in municipal and national assembly contests next May. It will be an instance of significant risk for Starmer, if he endures until then.

Succession Concerns

Missing from these assessments exists consensus concerning the individual of a successor and their proposed policies may differ with existing administration plans. This flaw in the transition plan is mentioned by those backing the incumbent as one of many reasons to remain with the incumbent.

Although discontented representatives could hesitate regarding these alerts, they similarly perceive within them the familiar, meaningless sound of low ambition that creates despondency with current conditions. It is the sound of lack of success to define Starmerism as simply a sequence of tactics for holding power.

Concluding Thoughts

It proves difficult to inspire faithfulness toward such a purpose. And most Labour MPs have tried. They have adhered to official positions, justified it to constituents, followed party discipline, accepted guarantees that their issues received attention.

Regicide is fraught with risk, but is it riskier compared to feigning that the existing prime minister possesses solutions about important matters that he never even names? The Shakespearean principle recommends carefulness in ousting a sitting prime minister. The alternative might prove more disastrous.

“The weight of these difficult days we must obey; Speak what we feel, rather than expected statements.”
